FPF2123 is described as a combination-type power distribution switch and load driver for mobile phones and other handheld devices. This device is built on an advanced CMOS process that includes a unique temperature-monitoring and safety-control feature which enables a low-power P-Channel MOSFET and high-side N-Channel MOSFET to operate together in a power-distribution switch in a single-chip. Furthermore, this device features a very low-on-resistance at both the P-Channel and N-Channel, resulting in better power efficiency and longer lifetime.The working of the device is based on the following principles. Firstly, there is a linear regulator used to provide an output voltage. Then, a low-side low-side N-Channel MOSFET is controlled by a control signal for power distribution. The control signal is generated by a buck regulator converting the output of the linear regulator. A comparator continually monitors the output voltage through a voltage divider circuit and if it falls below a certain threshold, the buck controller increases the switching frequency and helps in maintaining the output voltage.The FPF2123 also comprises of a high-side P-Channel MOSFET, the input of which is driven by a negative logic signal, with the logic 0 indicating the ‘on’ and logic 1 indicating the ‘off’ state. The control logic can also be used to control the operation of the external LED driver. The LED driver can be operated in either open drain or push-pull configuration, which is controlled by the ‘LED Source/Sink’ pin.The FPF2123 also includes an advanced Thermal Protection (TP) feature which monitors the temperature of the device. In case the device exceeds its safe operating temperature, the TP will shut down the device to protect it from thermal damage. The response along with trip point and hysteresis of the TP can be programmed through external resistors. In addition, the FPF2123 also includes a number of protection features, such as reverse drain current protection, open-drain over-voltage protection and an over-temperature shutdown.In conclusion, the FPF2123 power distribution switch, along with the load driver, offers a single-chip solution for mobile phones and other handheld devices.
