Diodes form a crucial part of most electrical and electronic circuits. The classification of diodes into single, double and others is based on their division into two parts -- the anode and the cathode. The anode represents the input current, whereas the cathode often denotes the output current. The common types of single diodes are Zener, junction, Schottky and PN junction. In this article we shall concentrate on rectifiers, particularly the FR103-AP (Field-Rectified Axial-Plated) model.
The FR103-AP is a single-phase rectifier composed of a single anode, a single cathode and a single PN junction. It is commonly used in power supplies and various other applications where it is necessary to rectify alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). Its principle of operation and conductivity are the same as all other single diodes. When current is applied in the forward direction, the diode provides a very low voltage drop and a high current conduction. In the reverse direction, however, no current is conducted at all. This is due to the fact that the PN junction is made of two layers of semiconducting materials held together with a barrier potential, which prevents current flow through it. This blocked current is known as the "reverse leakage Current".
The FR103-AP is mainly used for rectifying AC currents between 40 to 250v (rms). It also forms an efficient electrical filter. This means that as the AC current passes through it, it is converted into DC current while at the same time, filtering out any high frequency noise which may be present in the current.
One of the main applications of the FR103-AP is in power supplies. When DC current is needed, AC current is converted to DC current with the help of this rectifier, which also filters out any high frequency noise. The FR103-AP is also used in motor control circuits, pulse assemblies and signal conditioning circuits. In all these applications, it is used to provide stable, clean and ripple free DC current.
The working principle of the FR103-AP is relatively simple. The device is composed of a single anode, a single cathode and a single PN junction. When current is applied in the forward direction, the PN junction combines the two layers of semiconducting material to form a barrier, which prevents current from flowing through it in the reverse direction.
