The FT8870CD-DRB is a highly efficient power management integrated circuit (PMIC) and an LED driver solution designed to provide reliable output energy in X-phosphor, white-LED applications. With an operating voltage range of 1.8 V to 3.3 V and a high efficiency current source driver, FT8870CD-DRB provides an optimal solution for power and light intensity management in outdoor applications. The FT8870CD-DRB is essential for driving and controlling the output of X-phosphor, white-LEDs in a variety of applications.

The FT8870CD-DRB’s application fields span from automotive and avionics LED lighting, LED signage and displays, LED lamp and lighting, LED lighting control systems and LED map lighting, to LED strips and modules. FT8870CD-DRB is suitable for variety of LED lighting for all inclusive uses, including those for industrial, commercial, and residential applications. The chip’s consistent current output and compatibility with microcontroller makes it a viable solution for numerous applications related to automotives, aviation and LEDs.

The FT8870CD-DRB is driven by an external signal with a precision current source, and its designed to be used with LED modules and LED chains, then assess the LED status with the LED fault detection (LFD) function. With the LED current prevention function, FT8870CD-DRB is able to monitor the LED status and perform transitions with its internal compensation, by monitoring the LED current and temperature. Meanwhile, its fault detection and power control is built-in and its support for PWM signals adds further control and customization.

For its working principle, FT8870CD-DRB eliminates the dual power management problem of voltage output and current limit. It utilizes current sense to minimize the mismatch of integrated forward current and can detect the current and turn off the output protection in order to protect the LED. It is able to adjust the current sense voltage (CS) in a wide range to achieve a higher efficiency and accurate compensation, together with LFD, it is able to provide a high brightness image illuminating. Plus, the chip is also designed to understand the ambient temperature to perform a more efficient and accurate compensation.

FT8870CD-DRB is capable of direct adjustable current limit output, with a wide range of current sensing at 10 mV to 2.5 V and constant frequency up to 1.5 MHz, and an on-chip LED controller, it has a highly efficient drivability for LED strings as well as single LED control. In a sense, FT8870CD-DRB can serve as an optimized auto-drive LED product. The chip’s pulsed adjustable feature coupled with its diagnostics and the short-circuit protection ability makes it one of the most suitable choice for a range of LED application.

The FT8870CD-DRB runs at low external clock rates, oscillating between 2.5 MHz to 27 MHz, and with its active PWM dimming speed ranging from 14 bit/sec to 256 bit/sec, as well as the additional dimming frequencies of 1 KHz/20KHz and 6.5KHz, it offers a vast level of dimming flexibility to the end user. At its optimal operating range, the chip has a maximum conversion efficiency of 97%, and a temperature range of -40 °C to +125 °C.

The FT8870CD-DRB provides the maximum flexibility and efficiency for driving, controlling and monitoring LED lighting. With its unique current sense for DC-DC converter and an adjustable fault detect current level and a high level of dimming control, it’s suitable for application of X-phosphor, white LEDs with a high degree of accuracy, brightness and customization.
