GBU806-G Application Field and Working Principle

Diodes are essential components in electronic circuits for controlling the magnitude, frequency, and other properties of an electronic output signal. Among the diode components, bridge rectifier is one of the most widely used power converters which rectifies the AC power to DC power. GBU806-G is a bridge rectifier which is a four terminal device in which two of the terminals are connected to an external AC power source, and the other two are attached to the DC output.

The GBU806-G bridge rectifier has a total of 8 pins arranged in a full wave arrangement. It consists of eight parallel pairs of Forward Blocking Switching (FBS) thyristors designed to provide low losses by allowing the surge current of up to 67A to pass through it without exceeding the maximum on-state voltage. Its maximum Reverse Repetitive Working Voltage is 800V, which is the maximum DC output voltage for which it is suitable. It is intended for use in the applications of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Systems, Traction Systems, Welding Machines, Photovoltaic Inverters, Motor Control, Medical Equipment, and pumps, among others.

Working Principle

The working principle of GBU806-G bridge rectifier is based on the fact that when two solutions are connected in a loop, an applied alternating voltage will cause current to flow in one direction and then the other direction alternately. This is because when the applied voltage is positive, the diode passes current, but during the negative cycle, it blocks the current. Thus, the output has only one peak, so the bridge rectifier converts the alternating current to pulsating direct current over a single half cycle, making it suitable for use in Converter applications. The current through each arm of the bridge is provided by two FBS thyristors connected in series. When the positive input voltage is positive, the thyristor on the left will conduct and current will flow, and when the input voltage becomes negative, the thyristor on the right will conduct. This helps the bridge rectifier to continuously rectify the signal, regardless of its frequency.
