The GP2S60A is an analog reflective optical sensor that detects reflected light from its surface. It is made with a high-intensity gallium arsenide infrared-emitting diode (IRED) and an NPN silicon phototransistor receiver, encapsulated together in a compact unit. The GP2S60A is suitable for many applications such as detecting distances, following lines, and gesture recognition, as well as detection of glass surfaces and paper or other contents of a box.

Working Principle

The optical sensor works on a simple light reflection principle. It has IRED and phototransistor receiver are mounted facing each other in the same package. When the IRED emits light, some of it reflects off the target surface and is directed to the receiver. The resulting current that is generated is proportional to the amount of reflected light received. The GP2S60A is designed for short-distance applications and the surface reflectance should be more than 5% for accurate detection.

The GP2S60A also allows adjustable parameters such as the response time and sensitivity to be changed in order to maximize the usability of the sensor in different applications. The adjustment range of the sensitivity is 0mA - 3mA and the response time is determined by the duration of the LED, which is adjustable between 100 - 3,000 milliseconds.

The GP2S60A provides an easy, reliable, and cost-effective way to detect the presence or absence of an object and measure the gap size between them. It is an ideal choice for applications where the environment is too hazardous for human assistance and could also reduce the cost of sensors, when compared to ultrasonic sensors.
