A fuse is an electrical device used to protect an electronic circuit from overload. When too much current is drawn through the device, the fuse melts, breaking the circuit and preventing any further current from passing through. The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is a widely used second-generation mobile phone communication system. GSAP is an umbrella body of mobile telecommunications products which encompasses GSM and its seven application fields.

The seven fields of GSAP are Automatic Meter Reading (AMR), Wireless Internet, Mobile Interactive TV, Mobile Payment, Voice over IP (VoIP), Location Services (LBS) and Wireless Security. Each of these application fields has its own unique working principle.

  1. Automatic Meter Reading (AMR)
  2. The main working principle of Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) is to measure the amount of energy consumed by utilities, such as water, electricity or gas, from remote locations. It is done by using GSM technology to transmit the meter readings from the customer’s premises to a centralized server. The centralized server then accumulates and stores the data and in turn, passes it to the utility company.

  3. Wireless Internet
  4. Wireless Internet allows users to access the Internet without the need of a physical cable. It utilizes the mobile communication network of GSM to connect to Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The main working principle of the technology is to use radio frequency to send and receive data in the form of both text and multimedia content from any location.

  5. Mobile Interactive TV
  6. Mobile interactive TV is a form of mobile entertainment that allows users to access live programs such as news, sports, and movie shows at any time, anywhere. The main working principle lies in the integration of GSM technology with television broadcasting technology. This allows mobile devices to receive mobile TV broadcasts in digital format and as well provides interactivity for viewers to select programs and adjust channels.

  7. Mobile Payment
  8. Mobile Payment, also popularly known as Mobile Money, is a means of paying for goods and services using cell phones. It is currently being used for small payments, such as buying groceries or paying bills. The working principle of mobile payment relies on the connection between GSM and the merchant’s point-of-sale terminal. Consumers can use their phones to select items and services they want to purchase. After the transaction is completed, payments are transferred directly from the user’s bank account to the merchant.

  9. Voice over IP (VoIP)
  10. VoIP is a type of telecommunications technology that uses the Internet instead of the telephone lines as the medium for voice communication. It makes use of packet-switched networks that enable relatively low-cost real-time delivery of voice on the Internet. The main working principle utilized in VoIP is the ability of GSM to send and receive data packets over the Internet. This enables users to make VoIP calls from any mobile or fixed location.

  11. Location Services (LBS)

Location Services (LBS) is a type of service that uses precise geographical information acquired through GPS or other devices that use GSM mobile communication network to pinpoint the exact or approximate location of the user. It also provides services such as navigation, messaging, geo-tagging, location tracking and activity tracking. The working principle of LBS relies on the use of GSM network for acquiring the user’s location data.

  13. Wireless Security
  14. Wireless Security enables users to connect and access a private network securely by using an encrypted wireless connection. It is typically used in commercial establishments, airports and other public venues to provide secure wireless network connection. The working principle lies in the use of encryption algorithms and wireless protocols that each wireless device must use in order to be authenticated and recognized by the access point.

As one of the major components of GSM, GSAP’s seven application fields are a vital part of the mobile telecommunications industry. Each field has its own unique working principle that allows the secure and efficient transfer of data from one user to another. Fuses are devices that can be used to protect electronic circuits from overload. Although mainly used in electrical systems, the principles behind fuses can also be applied to the GSAP to protect each field from any excessive load or accidental connections.
