GT-BG800L is a kind of Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) which is widely used in telecommunications, power system, signal and instrumentation, and automated control system for lightning protection. It is gas-filled and spark-gap-type protective device that consist of a spark gap in a metal-shielded tube. It can effectively discharge high-voltage lightning or switching surge currents from the equipment or circuit to be protected by providing a low-impedance path to ground between the two electrodes placed within the tube.The working principle of GT-BG800L lies in a coaxial configuration. It comprises two concentric tubes, an outer metal-shielded tube and inner open-ended electrodes. There is also a gas like sulphur hexafluoride filled in the space between the two tubes; this gas is the key element which is used to control the current flow. The inner electrode is connected to the equipment’s ground and with the protection resistor (placed between the inner and outer tube for high voltage protection). The outer electrode is connected to the equipment, and is separated from the inner electrode by the gas-filled gap between them. When a surge discharge occurs, a spark forms within the gas-filled tube that temporarily bridges the spark-gap between the inner and outer electrodes, allowing current to flow and protecting the equipment from the surge. The spark dissipates quickly, creating a resistance that limits the external current to a safe level. To ensure the fast response and high reliable performance of the GT-BG800L, device characteristics such as spark-gap distance, the hold voltage and the ratio of the inner and outer tube, and its structure design.
