Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are essential parts of overvoltage protection systems. Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) arresters are devices which protect electric power systems from the possibility of lightning induced overvoltages. GDT arresters are formed by gas-filled tubes which will fire when a predetermined voltage is applied, limiting the voltage seen by the protected system. Application Field

Working Principle

The GT-CM90L arrester is composed of three stages. The first stage is an AC-blocking circuit containing an air gap or capacitor. The purpose of this stage is to block high frequency AC voltages and prevent them from propagating to the other stages of the arrester. The second stage consists of a GDT core with a spark gap which acts as a surge controlling element. The GDT core is filled with an inert gas such as nitrogen or sulfur hexafluoride. When a surge voltage is applied, the gas in the GDT will break down, creating an arc between the electrodes inside the GDT, thus dissipating the energy of the surge. The third stage of the arrester contains a ceramic body filled with clay, which cools down the GDT during its operation, and also provides an additional level of protection against transient overvoltages. In addition, the GT-CM90L arrester is designed to suppress and clamp the voltage at a given level in order to protect the connected equipment.
