Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are tradeoffs between surge-protection devices and current limiting devices. The GT-RLSAE80 is one such oscillatory current limiting device. Its application field is limited, but when used in the right applications, it can offer real-time protection in both AC and DC system.

The GT-RLSAE80 is an oscillatory current-limiting surge arrester designed to protect sensitive electrical and electronic equipment from transient overvoltage, lightning induced surges, or other events that can cause damaging voltage and current in AC and DC systems. The device utilizes a co-axial gas discharge tube and a series resistance to limit the total energy from transient overvoltage, lightning induced surges, or other events that might cause high voltage and/or currents. The resistance in the klystron tube, together with the high capacitance of the gas discharge tubes, forms a resonant LC circuit. In the event of a surge, the surge current is directed through the klystron tube and is dissipated as heat.

The GT-RLSAE80 is designed for use in environments that experience high levels of voltage transients and/or induced surges. One such application is in the smelting industry, where high temperatures and electrical currents are common. Additionally, the device can be used in data centers, where critical equipment is susceptible to external voltage transients. The GT-RLSAE80 can also be used to protect against electrical noise, such as radio frequency interference and electromagnetic fields.

The GT-RLSAE80 works by limiting the peak voltage of transient surges and induced voltages. This is because the high capacitance of the gas discharge tubes creates an impedance. As current flows through the device, it is dissipated into the ambient air by the heat generated in the tube, thus effectively limiting the peak voltage of the surge, directionally shorting it to the ground.

The GT-RLSAE80 is efficient in regulating or limiting outdoor surge currents up to 25kV. It is designed to fit in standard electrical boxes. The device is available in both standard and low profile configurations and can be installed in exposed or concealed locations depending on the application needs. Application specific surge ratings are also available.

The gas discharge tubes of the GT-RLSAE80 are subject to dielectric breakdown when exposed to an extreme level of electric field. This occurs due to the polarization of the space charge carriers in the gas. When the field strength exceeds the breakdown voltage, a non-uniform electric field is created, and a sudden gradual current, which is the triggering of the overvoltage protection, flows through the tube.

After the transient surge or voltage is triggered, the gas discharge tube acts like a resistor, allowing a slow, controlled discharge. This discharge limits the amount of current that passes and protects the sensitive equipment from destruction. The design of the GT-RLSAE80 also offers a long discharge time, which helps reduce the amount of current that passes through the device.

A salient feature of the GT-RLSAE80 is that it offers an extremely fast response time when compared to other transient-surge-protection products. When the device detects a surge, it is able to respond within 100 nanoseconds. This is important in preventing destructive damage to electronics due to transient voltage surges.

In summary, the GT-RLSAE80 is an oscillatory current-limiting surge arrester designed to protect sensitive electrical and electronic equipment from transient overvoltage, lightning induced surges, or other events that can cause damaging voltage and current. The device utilizes a klystron tube and a series resistance to limit the total energy from transient overvoltage surges. The device is efficient in regulation and limiting transient surge currents up to 25kV and also offers an extremely fast response time when detecting transient voltage surge, making it an ideal choice for applications in the smelting industry, data centers, or other applications where critical equipment is susceptible to external voltage transients.
