Proximity Sensors

Proximity sensors are electronic devices that produce a signal when their sensing circuitry detects the proximity of an object. They are commonly used for contactless sensing to detect the presence of objects in addition to monitoring the position and/or movement of objects. Proximity sensors typically emit electromagnetic radiation, ultrasound or infrared light waves that can react to the presence of objects. Examples of proximity sensors include those used in automobiles to detect the presence of an object, and those used in video games for detecting proximity of an object.

GX-ML12B-U-Z Application Field and Working Principle

GX-ML12B-U-Z is an inductive proximity sensor. It detects the objects that are within a certain distance using the principle of magnetic induction. The sensor uses a coil with an alternating current to create an electromagnetic field. When a metal object enters within this field, a current is induced in the metal object which causes an inductive voltage in the coil producing an oscillating signal. This signal is then rectified and amplified and its amplitude is proportional to the distance of the object from the sensor.

GX-ML12B-U-Z is mainly used for sensing the presence of metal objects such as screws, nuts, washers, and any other metallic objects. This sensor is commonly used in assembly lines for automated flexible assembly processes, such as in material handling systems, robotics applications, metal detection, and general non-contact sensing applications.

GX-ML12B-U-Z features a narrow profile with a sensing range up to 12mm (0.5in). The operating voltage is 12Vdc and the output is a short-circuit protected NPN transistor. It has a high immunity to any kind of interference including transverse or rotational movement of the detected object. The sensor is also equipped with a reverse polarity protection and a short-circuit protection for sustained long-term operation in harsh environments.

GX-ML12B-U-Z is ideal for applications where reliable detection of metallic objects is required such as in white goods, automotive industry, machine tools, automation, and process control.
