Optoisolators are devices used to electronically isolate receiver and driver circuits by creating an optically-coupled barrier between the two. The H11A1-X017 is an optoisolator from Avago Technologies which provides electrical isolation up to an isolation voltage of 5000Vrms using a Schmitt trigger output optocoupler and a transistor output. This optoisolator is very useful in controlling the power being supplied to circuits and protecting them from current and voltage spikes and it is also frequently used in data communications which requires transmitting and isolating digital signals between two circuits.

The H11A1-X017 optoisolator has a variety of uses and is often found in power supplies, motor drives and semiconductor applications. In terms of its working principle, the H11A1-X017 optoisolator uses a input-output board to couple the input and output circuits. This board has an infrared (IR) emitting diode attached to the input circuit. When a voltage is applied to the input circuit, the diode emits an IR signal towards the phototransistor on the output board. The phototransistor will then detect this signal and trigger a Schmitt trigger circuit, which amplifies the signal and then passes it to the output circuit. This circuit is optically isolated from the input circuit, providing the necessary electrical isolation.

The H11A1-X017 optoisolator is also capable of providing photovoltaic output. This term refers to the voltage which can be created when a light source is used to trigger a photovoltaic cell. In the case of this optoisolator, the phototransistor which is used to detect the incoming IR signal will create a potential difference between its terminals, thereby producing a voltage. The voltage output of the phototransistor will depend on the level of infrared light emitted from the diode.
