The H11A13S optoisolator (also referred to as an optical coupler or opto-coupler) is a Transistor, Photovoltaic Output type optoisolator. These are widely used for providing electrical isolation, such as in DC to DC converters, AC switching circuits, or communication applications. The H11A13S is an optoisolator that features a 650nm GaAs infrared light-emitting diode (LED) coupled with a fast-acting, high-output phototransistor. It has a narrow 0.04 to 0.4s rise time and fall time, with a minimum 10mm air-gap of optical isolation. The transistors used are NPN, and the operating temperature range for this device is -40°C to +100°C. The maximum output current rating is 100mA, with a maximum collector-emitter voltage rating of 50V, ensuring a high-performance interface.

The H11A13S is suitable for use in applications which require data signal/power conversion or controlling circuits for voltage isolation, constructed into DC to DC converters, AC switching circuits, and other communication related applications. Its compact size, low operating current, low voltage drop, and fast response time, make it perfect for telecommunication, motor control, security systems, and industrial automation.

So how does it work? At the heart of an optoisolator is a light-sensitive semiconductor known as an LED. When current is applied to this LED, light energy is emitted. This energy is then absorbed by a light-sensitive transistor. This transistor acts as a switch and, depending on the amount of current applied to the LED, it will either open or close. In the H11A13S optoisolator, the LED and the transistor are separated by a transparent insulator and they are optically coupled. This ensures electrical isolation between the input and output circuits, while allowing the input circuit to control the output circuit.
