The H24A1 optoisolator (transistor, photovoltaic output) is a device used to electrically isolate two circuits by using light rather than a direct electrical connection. It consists of two parts, an LED (light-emitting diode) and a phototransistor. When connected to an input voltage, the LED turns on and emits light. The light is detected by the phototransistor, which then activates its collector-emitter current, creating a corresponding electrical output.
In addition to providing electrical isolation between circuits, optoisolators also protect against electrical noise generated by one circuit and transmitted to another. This is especially important in the medical and automotive industries, where human safety and sensitive equipment is at stake.
The H24A1 is sensitive to light inputs ranging from UV to IR wavelengths (270-950nm). It requires only 2mA of forward current for proper operation, making it energy efficient and ideal for applications where space and energy are constrained. The current transfer ratio (CTR) of the H24A1 is very high, meaning a small input current can cause a large output current. The maximum allowable reverse voltage of the H24A1 is 6V, and the maximum allowed collector-emitter voltage is 80V. Both of these numbers make the H24A1 highly immune to external noise and environmental factors such as electrostatic discharge.
One unique feature of the H24A1 optoisolator is that it can be operated in either cathode or anode mode. This is advantageous for applications where the TTL voltage is negative or higher than the allowable forward voltage of the LED. When operated in anode mode, the LED is turned on when the input voltage is negative, and it is turned off when the input voltage is positive.
The H24A1 optoisolator is ideal for use in environments where low-cost, stable, and reliable isolation is required. It makes a great choice for applications that require both a phototransistor and an LED, such as automotive diagnostics, programmable logic controllers, and digital logic decoding. It can also be used in industrial automation that requires high speed and low power consumption. Further, the H24A1 can provide an additional layer of protection against electrical interference, making it a great choice for medical systems and communication electronics.
