Optoisolators are electronic components that allow electrical signals to pass between two separate circuits while keeping the separate circuits isolated from one another. HCPL-2601-320E Optoisolators – Logic Output are devices that use light based isolation between two circuits. The device consists of two elements: an Input LED (light emitting diode) and a high gain phototransistor Output device. They provide signal isolation, power isolation and current or voltage switching. It provides 2500Vrms (1minute) isolation between the input and output. Its features include high response time, operation from 3.15 to 5.5V supply voltage, 9mA maximum forward current, AC/DC logic compatible Input, TTL compatible Output, and an adjustable current transfer ratio.
This device can be used in many applications like microprocessors, analog to digital conversion, signal conditioning, automotive systems, industrial safety systems, and mobile communication. It is also used to protect sensitive circuits from high transients, electromagnetic radiation and high common mode voltages. In addition, it can be used to isolate power supplies, control signals, and serial and parallel interfaces.
The working principle of the HCPL-2601-320E device is based on the fact that when a light signal from the Input LED is applied to the phototransistor, then the phototransistor begins to conduct current. The current transfer ratio (CTR) of the device can be adjusted by using different light signals, so that the phototransistor can be made to conduct more or less current, depending on the desired output current. The device works in two operating modes, the "on" mode and the "off" mode, in which the phototransistor is activated or deactivated, respectively. In the "off" mode, no current is conducted by the phototransistor, while in the "on" mode, a current is conducted by the phototransistor and the output current is increased. Additionally, the device has a saturation voltage of the phototransistor, defined by the input current, and the device will turn off above the saturation voltage.
