High-Definition Video Distribution Protocol (HDVDP) is a digital streaming audio/video protocol based on a coaxial connector system. The concept of HDVDP was originally developed for military and defense applications, but the technology has come to be used more widely in consumer electronic devices, allowing users to interconnect HDVDP-enabled devices for data and audio/video transmission. In this article, we will explore the application field and working principle of HDVDP.

Application Field

HDVDP is a highly versatile protocol that is used to connect a variety of consumer electronics, such as televisions, cable boxes, digital video recorders (DVRs), computers, gaming consoles, and Blu-ray players. It can also be used to connect higher-end audio/video components, such as processors and amplifiers used in home theater systems. HDVDP cables are also commonly used to transmit data from external devices, such as scannners, printers, and hard drives.

The HDVDP protocol is capable of transmitting high-definition video signals up to 1080i resolution. It can also transmit 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound signals and can support HDCP copy protection. The HDMI format used by many consumer electronics is based on HDVDP. In addition, HDVDP can be used for long-distance connections by using shielded twisted-pair (STP) cabling.

Working Principle

HDVDP connections typically use an F-connector interface that supports data rates up to 500 Mbps per second. The HDVDP protocol uses a differential signal (inverted and non-inverted) to transmit the data on the two wires of the cable. The data is first transmitted from the sender using the Non-Inverted signal. The receiver then uses the inverted signal to receive and decode the data.

The differential transmission is used to reduce the amount of noise from external sources, such as radio and television broadcasts. In addition, the signals are modulated with encoding algorithms to convert the digital data into analog signals. Encoding schemes such as 8B/10B and 4D-PAM are used to ensure data integrity and maintain the robustness of the signal.

HDVDP also uses a number of protocols to manage the connection, such as handshaking, link negotiation, and error checking. These protocols allow the two devices connected via HDVDP to configure the connection based on the capabilities and requirements of the devices, such as resolution and audio/video formats.

HDVDP is a highly reliable and robust protocol that can be used to transmit a variety of audio/video signals over long distances. Its versatile nature makes it a popular choice for consumer electronic devices, allowing it to be used for both data and audio/video transmission.
