The HEDL-5640 series encoder is a multi-turn absolute optical encoder designed based on a hybrid code disk technology. It incorporates a mechanical sensing element and an LED optical system that rotates together. Through the corresponding code disk mounted on the motor shaft, different pulse structures are obtained, enabling the extractable resolution to reach 13 bits.
The HEDL-5640 series of encoders is a reliable and widely used option for various applications. This series of optical encoders is mainly used for high precision and high resolution position measurement and feedback control systems that require standard pulse signals, such as servo motors, machine tools, electronics, robotics and other automation equipment.The working principle of the HEDL-5640#A13 optical encoder is based on the Hybrid Code Disk technology. The code disk is composed of four code tracks and contains two unique patterns. The repetition period of the code patterns is four times the angular displacement per revolution. Each of the code patterns contains 8 bits of information, resulting in a total of 16 bits per revolution of the code disk. The HEDL-5640#A13 optical encoder utilizes an array of LEDs to accurately read the analogue tracking patterns associated with the code disk. The encoder includes two separate photo detector elements which together with the corresponding LED diodes produce two output signals known as A and B, which vary from high to low in relation to the angular position of the disk.

The signals from the LEDs are amplified and then filtered to eliminate any errors caused by noise.
