The HG1120CA50 is a piezo-electrically driven angular rate sensor. It is composed of a vibrating structure gyroscope (VSG) and four SSI output to provide a data presentation of angular rate and temperature information. The high-precision vibrating structure is driven by electrostatic fields generated with the help of piezoelectric ceramics. This system of transduction of angular rate ensures a high level of performance, reliability and accuracy.

The sensing principle of the HG1120CA50 is based on Coriolis force. Coriolis force is the force that acts on an object in motion, when it is viewed in a rotating reference frame. When a vibrating structure gyroscope is used, it leverages a Coriolis effect-based sensing element to measure angular rate more accurately inside of the intended field of operation. The vibration of the structure is generated by the drive voltage applied across the piezoelectric transducer (PZT). This PZT drives the vibrating structure which is made of a mass each embedded with four mechanical sensing elements. The Coriolis forces generated by the vibrating structure gyroscope element excite one of the two driven modes (corresponding to clockwise and anticlockwise angular rate) which is detected by the embedded capacitive sensing elements.
