HHF Application Field and Working Principle

A HHF (high humidity fuseholder) is a device used in electrical equipment and other wiring systems to provide temperature protection for the wiring system. HHFs are primarily used in applications that may be exposed to wet or humid environments, or high temperatures.

The application fields of HHF include industrial equipment, medical devices, communication systems, and consumer electronics. The majority of HHFs are UL Recognized or Mil-Spec approved. HHFs have also been used as a practice safety device in many military and high-end consumer electronic projects.

The working principle of a HHF is similar to that of a normal fuseholder. When excess current is drawn by an electrical circuit, the current heats the wires, the fuse wire, and the contacts of the fuseholder, which all generate heat and cause the fuse to blow. However, HHFs have a design feature that is specific to protect against wet or humid environments: they are constructed with a “coating” that prevents moisture from entering and blocking the immediate area. This coating, known as a dielectric coating, is designed to be impervious to moisture and prevent the formation of a short circuit, which can result in an electrical fire in a wet or humid environment.

In addition to the dielectric coating, HHFs also have a safety feature that prevents the fuse from blowing unintentionally. This safety feature is a conductor that runs internally, providing a physical pathway to the fuse that will normally carry an electrical current. This pathway is adequate to force the current to travel through the fuse, until the current is strong enough to cause the fuse to blow.

The combination of the dielectric coating and safety feature is what makes a HHF an ideal choice for protect sensitive wiring systems. It ensures that both excess current and wet/humid environments will not cause the wiring to become compromised. HHFs also provide a significant cost savings compared to other protection devices that would be required for similar applications.
