­Historical high-current connectors (HHNs) are a commonly used and versatile type of connector. They are favored for electrical distribution and power transmission applications where high current and/or voltage levels are present. The connectors can be used in all types of electrical assemblies and systems, and often are employed to terminate cables.

HHNs are also known by other names including high-current connectors, HHN disconnects, high-current plugs, and high-current receptacles. These terms are used interchangeably in the industry. Additionally, HHNsare typically marketed in two parts – a male and female connector.

HHNs are used in a variety of applications, including high-current DC applications, industrial applications, marine and off-road applications, and automotive applications. They are often used in situations where a high-current connection must be made quickly and securely in a dirty, wet, or hazardous environment. Additionally, HHNs can be used in applications where the temperature or causticity levels may be too high for conventional connectors.

The unique design of HHNs allows them to handle much higher levels of amperage and voltage than a traditional connector. This is achieved primarily through a combination of contact surface area, contact design, and terminals. HHN connectors have enlarged contact surfaces to increase the amount of current transferred with each connection. There are a range of different HHN connectors available on the market. Fuseholders are one of the most common applications for HHN connectors. Fuseholders provide a safe way of connecting electrical circuits to an external power supply. HHN fuseholders are able to reliably and safely connect multiple circuits to a power supply through either a single or multiple fuse links. Generally, HHN fuseholders are constructed of stainless steel or copper. The fuseholders are connected to the power supply using a HHN socket or receptacle, and then the fuselinks are connected to the fuseholder via a male HHN pin.

The working principle of the HHN fuseholder is relatively simple. The fuseholder contains a pair of contacts, typically made from brass or copper, which are electrically separated by a spring-loaded plunger. The plunger is connected to the fuse links. When the fuse link carries a current, the plunger opens up, allowing the current to travel through to the contacts. If the current rises to an unsafe level, the plunger is forced back, breaking the circuit and preventing any further current flow.

HHN fuseholders provide a safe and reliable connection for applications that require a current over 50 amps. The connectors are designed to withstand high voltages, operate in hazardous environments, and are easily installed and maintained.
