Fixed inductors are common electrical components that are widely used in electrical circuits to store energy in electromagnetic fields. Most inductors are made up of conductive coils and a core material, typically ferrite or iron, which is the component that provides the inductance. This core material, along with the number of coil turn winds, determines the inductance.

One type of fixed inductor, the HK1608R18K-T, is a radial leaded industrial grade designed for use in high temperature, high reliability applications. It is encased in a ceramic core with a ferrite magnetic material, enabling it to perform and maintain its core characteristics in extreme temperatures of -40 to +125 degrees celsius.

The HK1608R18K-T’s radial leaded construction also enables it to be used in a variety of circuit types, including switching, linear, and power circuits. It is particularly useful in switching circuits because of its low DC resistance, which enables it to operate with less power loss. The inductor is also versatile for use in high current applications, as its high saturation current is designed to handle the electrical conductivity without overheating and causing damage to the device.

In terms of its working principle, the inductor works to store energy—which is what an inductor does—through the electromagnetic field created by the alternating current passing through it. As the current flows through the inductor, the changing magnetic field created creates a voltage, which is directed opposite the current flow. This voltage opposes any further change in the current, creating an inductance.

The magnitude of the inductance is determined by the number of turns—that is, the number of times the wire is wrapped around the core—the core material, and the size of the core. When the inductor is used in a circuit, the inductance is measured by how much the current is hindered by the voltage created by the magnetic field.

The HK1608R18K-T is ideal for applications where high electrical conductivity is desired in extreme temperatures. It can be used in a variety of different circuits, including switching, linear, and power circuits and, due to its radial construction, is able to work with less power loss than other fixed inductors. The working principle of the inductor is based on the magnetic field that is created by passing an alternating current through it. This field then creates a voltage that opposes any further current change, resulting in an inductance.
