The inductor’s operation is based on Faraday’s law of induction which states that an electric field produces an electromotive force within a conductor when it is exposed to a changing magnetic field. As current flows through the wires within the inductor, a magnetic field is created. This field, in turn, creates a counter force which stores the energy as an inductance.
Once energized, the inductor can store a certain level of energy for a specified period of time. This energy can then be released back to the circuit when the circuit is de-energized. As current passes through the inductor, the excess energy is dissipated which gives the item the ability to suppress high voltage spikes or surges.
This is particularly useful in high-frequency switching applications. In an AC circuit, the inductor acts as a filter, preventing the flow of direct current while allowing alternating current to pass through. At higher frequencies, the inductance is able to bypass the control frequency, thus helping to improve signal accuracy in electronic and telecommunications systems.
