The device is also rated beyond the usual -40 to +85 °C temperature range – by an additional 65 °C when operating under shock/vibration conditions. It offers low power consumption of only 150mW, enabling it to be used in portable or handheld settings.
The HMC290E\'s working principle is based on the use of differential amplifier attenuator technology. It works by splitting an input signal into two paths, and then passing each signal through a differential amplifier with adjustable attenuation. This differential amplifier then creates an output signal which is the sum of these two signals, minus the desired amount of attenuation. Thus, the amount of signal attenuation can be adjusted by changing the bias voltage that is applied to the two amplifiers.
