Working Principle

The HOA0891-T55 consists of a high-efficiency infrared LED emitter and an NPN silicon phototransistor housed side-by-side on an FRP substrate. Light from the LED is received by the phototransistor, providing a high collector-to-emitter voltage when there is no object cutting off the light. When an object is inserted into the slot, the infrared light is blocked from reaching the phototransistor, reducing the collector-to-emitter voltage to a low value.

The slot type of the photointerrupter makes it ideal for object detection applications. A passing object interrupts the infrared beam from the LED to the phototransistor, causing a sudden change in the output signal from a low state to a high state. The output voltage of the phototransistor (VCE) is then controlled by the amount of infrared light received by the phototransistor.
