The HOA0880-T51 is an optical sensor photointerrupter slot type with a transistor output. It is designed to detect the presence or absence of a packet of paper or other opaque material. It consists of two little modules joined together: the transmitter and the receiver module. The transmitter module comprises a light-emitting diode (LED) and a collector lens while the receiver module includes an integrated detector photodiode. The two modules are placed along two sides of a slot. When no paper is placed between the two modules, the transmitter and receiver modules are in different positions, and the LED cannot emit light into the receiver side. When an opaque material is placed inside the slot, it interrupts the LED\'s beams thus activating the photodiode detector. Consequently, an electric current will be produced within the two modules and the output will change.

The HOA0880-T51 is designed to work with a wide supply voltage range (from 5 to 30V) and high current capability (up to 90mA). It features a fast reaction time of 15µs, and a wide gap distance of 8mm. Additionally, it is magnetic flux free and has a low temperature coefficient. It is also water, dust, and shock resistant.

The HOA0880-T51 is widely used for applications like paper sensing, page numbering, printer paper positioning, printer paper counting, paper sheet detecting, banking applications and automatic bookbinding. It is also used for level sensing in water drains, moving surface detection in textile works, fuel sensors and product counting.

The working principle of the HOA0880-T51 is based on the interruption of the light emitted by the LED from the transmitter module by an opaque material placed in the slot. This interruption will result in the activation of the photodiode detector located in the receiver module and the output signal will change accordingly. Its small size, low power consumption and high reliable performance is what makes the HOA0880-T51 popular for many applications.
