This ICS180M-52 is a low power, low phase noise, low jitter frequency synthesizer chip. It is specifically designed to provide a high-resolution, fast-switching frequency synthesizer with maximum performance and highest accuracy.
ICS180M-52 is especially suitable for usage in cellular phones, GPS navigation, base stations, wireless communication, industrial data acquisition systems and broad band wireless systems. This device helps reduce power consumption and also helps to provide reliable data communication with flexibility, performance and high accuracy.
Moreover, this device is self-powered and can generate frequency of up to 50 MHz with accuracy of 10 - 100ppm. It has an in-built buffer amplifier which helps cancels out the input noise, hence reducing total phase noise and jitter in the output signal.The PLL loop bandwidth of ICS180M-52 is quite wide and helps to guarantee a fast buffered output frequency switching with a settling time of ≈800ns.
The ICS180M-52 is designed as a fully programmable frequency synthesizer which can be operated from a single 2.7-5.5V supply. On-chip voltage regulation helps to reduce its total current consumption in the active state. The device has an automatically gain compensated loop filter, offering maximum design flexibility while keeping the external loop bandpass filter at a minimum. Its loop bandwidth can be officially adjusted in four ranges.
The PLL of ICS180M-52 uses a phase-frequency detector (PFD), a charge pump, a loop filter and a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) as its fundamental frequency generating components. The phase-frequency detector compares the phase of the input signal with the phase of the output signal and gives a digital output to the charge pump. The charge pump then provides a current or voltage signal to the loop filter. The filter then processes this signal and ensures the stability of the loop.
The PLL output is then used to control the VCO for producing the desired frequency. The VCO frequency is driven by the output of the loop filter. The signal from the VCO is then fed back to the PFD to close the PLL loop. By varying the voltage or current input to the VCO, the output frequency can be controlled over a wide frequency range as long as the loop bandwidth is adjusted accordingly. This helps to ensure that the output frequency is precise and consistent. Hence, this PLL helps to keep the output frequency precise and accurate over wide frequency ranges.
The synthesis of ICS180M-52 is based on a divide-by-N counter, a programmable divider array and the digital calibration logic and data register. The device has a programmable reference divider and a programmable harmonic divider to enable the device to support a wide range of input frequencies. It also has a programmable output divider, where the output frequency can be changed with a resolution of 1Hz.
It also has an integrated micro-controller unit (MCU) for programming and monitoring the synthesizer. This MCU has an eight-bit data bus and a serial interface bus for programming the device and displaying the output frequencies.
