The ICS508M is a low jitter, frequency-agile clock generator, suitable for applications ranging from consumer to enterprise. With a wide frequency range and very low jitter, it is ideal for high-end solutions such as ASICs, FPGAs, and microcontrollers. The ICS508M uses a phase-locked loop (PLL) and a frequency synthesizer to generate a stable and accurate clock signal from an input source such as a crystal oscillator or an external clock signal.
The ICS508M has an adjustable range of 25 MHz to 800 MHz, and supports standard clock rates such as 33.33 MHz, 66.67 MHz and 133.33 MHz. The ICS508M also has a wide range of output waveform options, including LVPECL, LVDS, CML and CMOS, allowing it to be used in a wide variety of applications. Additionally, the ICS508M can be used to generate multiple clock frequencies and phases, and is capable of providing up to four phase-shifted outputs.
The ICS508M phase-locked loop consists of four components: a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), a divide-by-N counter, a phase detector, and a digital/analog filter. The VCO generates a signal at a frequency proportional to an input voltage. The output of the VCO is connected to the input of the divide-by-N counter, which divides the signal frequency by a given number. The output of the divide-by-N counter is then connected to the phase detector, which compares the input signal frequency to a reference signal. The output of the phase detector is then fed into a digital/analog filter, which generates an output voltage that is proportional to the difference in phase between the two signals. This output voltage is then fed back to the VCO to adjust its frequency, thereby locking it in phase with the reference signal.
The frequency synthesizer used in the ICS508M consists of a digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a counter, a prescaler, and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The DAC is used to generate a reference signal, which is then divided by the prescaler and the counter. The output of the counter is then used to select the desired output frequency by an ADC. The ADC corresponds the output frequency to the reference frequency, and the output of the DAC is adjusted accordingly, allowing the ICS508M to generate multiple frequencies from a single reference signal.
The ICS508M is able to generate very low jitter outputs by utilizing PLLs and frequency synthesizers. These two components allow for high accuracy, even in the presence of noise, and a wide range of frequency outputs.
