Fixed Inductors

Working Principle

A fixed inductor works by bringing a conductor into a magnetic field. When the conductor crosses the magnetic field, a voltage is induced in the conductor which is proportional to the rate of change of the magnetic field. In its simplest form, an inductor is a coil of wire and at any given time, there is a certain amount of current passing through the coil and producing a magnetic field. As the current increases, so does the magnetic field, and the voltage induced is proportional to the rate of change of that magnetic field.

This induced voltage is used to store energy in the form of a magnetic field within the inductor. When the current stops, the magnetic field is reduced, releasing the stored energy and creating a voltage in the opposite direction of the original induced voltage. By carefully controlling the current going into and from the inductor, the voltage induced across it can be used to accurately control the power delivered to other components.
