Fixed Inductors
Fixed inductors, often referred to as coils, are passive components comprised of a conducting wire wrapped around a core material. This creates a magnetic field when a current is passed through it. Fixed inductors are used in many applications including filters, transformers and one of the most popular types - the IHB5EB472K.
IHB5EB472K Application Field and Working Principle
The IHB5EB472K is a general-purpose, radial-style, Leaded Inductors ideal for applications such as switch mode power supplies, DC/DC converters and electronic ballasts. It features a nominal inductance of 4.7uH and a maxim operating temperature of 125˚C. It’s designed for noisy environments such as loudspeakers, VCRs, TVs, etc. and is particularly useful for applications where the inductance needs to remain constant over varying signals.
The IHB5EB472K is based on a fixed inductor design, and is circular in shape. It consists of a ferrite core material, or magnetic layer material, with a winding of copper wire around the core in a spiral design. The core material is chosen so that it has low electrical conductivity, which prevents eddy currents in the core and helps reduce heating. The copper winding is electrically isolated, thanks to the non-conductive tape roll at the center. In addition, each end of the winding is connected to two insulated terminals.
The IHB5EB472K’s working principle is also the same as other types of fixed inductors. When an alternating current is applied, the inductor creates a constantly rotating magnetic field, creating a second-order voltage that is proportional to the applied current. This second-order voltage will act in opposition to the applied voltage, creating a constant voltage drop across the inductor.
