The IIS2MDCST is a integrated, low-power, low-noise magnetic sensor which is designed to measure the magnitude and direction of environmental magnetic fields up to ± 500 Gauss and is targeted for motion sensing applications such as compass heading or motor control.
The sensor includes a signal converter that converts the raw magnetic field data into a two- dimensional vector representation, extracting both azimuth and inclination angle information which can be accessed through a 16-bit digital serial interface.
Ratiometric sensing technology is employed in the IIS2MDCST to provide a linear or nonlinear measure of the environmental magnetic field, with linear scaling recommended as default.
The device also features a high SNR and low offset, low-power consumption, and flexibility due to external compensation. It is also equipped with a temperature compensation algorithm and can be configured for absolute or relative measurements.
The basic working principle of the IIS2MDCST involves focusing a highly sensitive internal sensor on the external magnetic field. The sensor measures the direction and magnitude of the environmental magnetic field, then the signal- conditioning electronics amplify and filter the signal before it is digitized. Finally, the digitized signal is converted into a vector representation representing the direction and magnitude of the magnetic field.
The IIS2MDCST sensor has three separate operating modes. In continuous mode, the device generates a non-averaged vector output each time its data output register is read. In single conversion mode, the device generates an averaged vector output each time its data output register is read. Finally, in power-down mode, the device is placed in a low power consumption state.
The IIS2MDCST magnetic sensor is commonly used for applications such as motor control, indoor navigation, consumer electronics, robotics, compassing, geomagnetic sensing, and HVAC systems. It is especially useful for compass heading measurements, providing an accurate reading of the heading angle in the presence of external ambient magnetic field variations.
The IIS2MDCST magnetic sensor is an ideal choice for embedded motion sensing applications which require accurate and reliable magnetic field measurements in a small form factor. It combines a highly sensitive sensor, advanced processing, and a low power consumption in a single device, making it an excellent choice for embedded systems.
