The ILild is a 6-pin optoisolator from International Rectifier Corporation which is designed for input/output isolation in industrial applications. It consists of an infrared sensing phototransistor in an aluminum nitride package and a high efficiency infra-Red light emitting diode securely mounted in close proximity. With its low operating power, the ILild offers many advantages over traditional optocouplers, including better system performance and better reliability.

The applications that the ILild is designed for include, but are not restricted to, the following: motor control, power system controller, robotics, computer peripherals, power supply controller, and any system requiring signal or power isolation. As well as input/output isolation, the ILild can provide complete system isolation by using the output drive transistor. The working principle of the ILild is simple and easy to understand. The light emitting diode produces a beam of light upon application of a forward voltage across its pins, and this light beam is coupled to the phototransistor. When the light beam strikes the phototransistor, it will cause the device to conduct current, resulting in a potential difference between the collector and the emitter, thus producing the transistor’s action. The collector-emitter voltage difference is proportional to the intensity of the infrared light from the LED, hence the ILild’s ability to provide highly reliable light-based isolation.

The ILild can also be used as a signal buffer. Its output transistor can drive up to 100mA, making the ILild well suited for driving high-performance devices such as LEDs, relays and switches. Additionally, the ILild can perform sophisticated analog level control and signal transformation. Due to its wide range of operating voltage, the ILild can be employed in a wide variety of applications. Its minimum operating voltage can go as low as 0.2V, while its maximum can reach up to 65V.
