The ILD5-X009T consists of a LED and a phototransistor or photodarlington contained within a single package. The LED is optically coupled to the phototransistor or photodarlington. The LED is driven by an external voltage, providing a light signal that is transferred to the phototransistor or photodarlington. When the LED is turned on, the Base-Emitter junction of the phototransistor or photodarlington is turned on. This causes the Collector-Emitter junction to be forward biased, which allows current to flow from the Collector to the Emitter.

The ILD5-X009T has an output current (collector-emitter) of 0.2 A maximum and a continuous forward current (emitter-collector) of 50 mA minimum. The Collector-Emitter saturation voltage is 1 Volt maximum, and the isolation voltage between input and output is 5000 Volts minimum. The LED forward voltage is 1.2 to 1.4 Volts at IF 20 mA. The turn-on time is 2.5 µs maximum at IF 20 mA, and the turn-off time is 1.5 µs maximum at IF 20 mA.
