IntroductionMagnetic sensors come in various shapes and sizes, ranging from shape-shifting speedometers and proximity sensors to the more sophisticated Position, Proximity and Speed (PPS) modules. PPS modules are used for various purposes, such as measuring position or displacement of an object, determining presence or absence of an object in a field, or measuring the speed of an object. The most popular PPS module is the ILMM 5 magnetic sensor. It is a modern, low-cost PPS module designed and produced by the German company, ITRIS. The module is composed of a small, compact housing made out of lightweight plastic and contains a variety of astute magnetic sensing components and circuitry.Basic Working Principle The ILMM 5 operates on the basic principle of detecting the magnetic field strength of a nearby object and using this data to deduce the object’s position and/or speed. For robotics, the most common applications are end effectors, mobile robots, and autonomous vehicles. In the automotive sector, the ILMM 5 is used for autonomous safety systems such as radar-assisted cruise control and automatic braking systems. The sensor can also be used for navigation systems by providing an accurate, reliable, and low-cost method of measuring 3D position with respect to absolute coordinates.
