Inductive linear position transducers known as ILU2s are used for electronically measuring linear position for application in a multitude of industries, including subsea oil & gas, automotive, aerospace and medical devices, among others. An ILU2 typically consists of two main pieces of hardware: a primary coil integrated into a measurement tape, and a secondary coil located within a detection head, also known as a pickoff head. ILU2s are used to measure linear displacement or position with industry-leading accuracy. By measuring position in two directions, ILU2 transducers can provide highly accurate absolute position, providing more repeatable accuracy.

The two coils within an ILU2 transduce are wound around a rigid structure. As a result, the primary and secondary coils are magnetically coupled, inducing a voltage into the secondary coil when an electrical current is applied to the primary coil. This process, known as inductive transduction, ensures high precision and accurate measurement that is not affected by environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and corrosion.

ILU2 transducers function according to Faraday\'s principle. When an alternating electrical current is applied to the primary coil, it generates a changing magnetic field around the coil which causes a voltage to be induced in the secondary coil. The amount of voltage induced in the secondary coil is directly proportional to the distance between the two coils, so as the parts move relative to each other, the voltage within the secondary coil changes. This voltage change is proportional to the displacement that the component is experiencing, accurately measuring and transmitting the absolute position of the part.

ILU2s are used in a variety of industrial, medical, and scientific applications. They are useful for monitoring any negative displacement, such as compression or depression of an object or component. This makes them particularly valuable in medical practices, as they can be used to measure the compression of skin and other tissue. ILU2s are also used to position display panels, monitor levels of hydraulic fluid and maintain proper air density in aircraft cockpits.

In addition to measuring linear displacement, ILU2s can be used to measure speed. By measuring the rate of change in voltage output in the secondary coil, the speed of the part can be accurately and precisely monitored. ILU2s can also be used to measure the displacement speed of powdered or granular materials, such as sand or grain.
