The INA240A3D device is a voltage output, current sense amplifier with enhanced PWM rejection that senses the voltage drop across the shunt resistor over a wide common-mode voltage range of –4 V to 80 V, independent of supply voltage. The negative common-mode voltage allows the device to operate below ground to accommodate the flyback cycling of typical solenoid applications. Enhanced PWM rejection provides a high level of rejection of large common-mode transients (ΔV/Δt) in systems using pulse-width modulated (PWM) signals. This feature allows accurate current measurement without large transients and associated recovery ripple on the output voltage. The device operates from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply and consumes a maximum supply current of 2.4mA. Four fixed gains are available: 20 V/V, 50 V/V, 100 V/V, and 200 V/V. The low offset of the zero-drift architecture supports current sensing with a maximum voltage drop across the shunt down to 10mV full scale. All versions are specified over the extended operating temperature range (–40°C to +125°C) and are available in 8 lead TSSOP and 8-lead SOIC packages.

    1. Amplifier input signal

        The INA240A3D is designed to handle large common-mode transients over a wide voltage range. Input signals from current measurement applications for linear and PWM applications can be connected to amplifiers to provide highly accurate outputs with minimal common-mode transient artifacts.

    2. Enhanced PWM Rejection Operation

        The enhanced PWM rejection of the INA240A3D increases attenuation for large common-mode ΔV/Δt transients. The large ΔV/Δt common-mode transients associated with PWM signals can be used in applications such as motor or solenoid drivers and switching power supplies. Traditionally, large ΔV/Δt common-mode conversions have been handled strictly by increasing the amplifier signal bandwidth, which increases die size, complexity, and ultimately cost. The INA240 is designed with high common mode rejection techniques to reduce large ΔV/Δt transients before the system is disturbed by these large signals. The high AC CMRR combined with the signal bandwidth allows the INA240 to provide minimal output transients and ringing compared to standard circuit approaches.

    3. Input signal bandwidth

        The INA240A3D input signal representing the current being measured is accurately measured with minimal disturbance from the large ΔV/Δt common-mode transients described earlier. For PWM signals typically associated with motors, solenoids, and other switching applications, the monitored current changes at a much slower rate than faster PWM frequencies. The INA240A3D bandwidth is defined by the –3dB bandwidth of the device’s internal current sense amplifier; see the Electrical Characteristics table. The device bandwidth provides the fast throughput and fast response needed to detect and handle overcurrent events quickly. Without higher bandwidth, protection circuits may not have sufficient response time and may damage the application or circuit being monitored. Harmonic distortion increases at the upper limit of the amplifier bandwidth without detrimental changes to the detection of overcurrent events. However, as the measured current bandwidth begins to approach the INA240 bandwidth, the increased distortion at the highest frequencies must be accounted for. The entire amplifier bandwidth is always available for fast overcurrent event levels, while low frequency signals are amplified with low distortion. For frequencies close to the maximum bandwidth, the output signal accuracy is reduced. Individual requirements determine acceptable distortion limits for high frequency current sensing applications. Testing and evaluation are required in the final application or circuit to determine acceptance criteria and verify that performance levels are within system specifications.
