Fixed inductors, also known as chokes or coils, are electrical components used to store energy in a form of magnetic field. They are used in a wide range of applications, from power supplies, radio frequency applications, analog circuits, communication networks to high frequency (RF) and pulse radio signal processing. The IR02ST561J is one type of fixed inductor that is be widely used in the electronics industry.

The IR02ST561J fixed inductor is a SMD surface-mount device, which is small in size and has low power consumption. The dimension of the inductor is 2.0mm x 1.2mm x 0.63mm, providing the customer a wide range of applications without the need of PCB re-design. With the 0.15 ohm DCR, the new IR02ST561J can sustain a higher saturation current and provide the user with better thermal performance. Additionally, the inductor is RoHS complaint.

Regarding application field, this IR02ST561J fixed inductor is capable of working in various circuits for diverse applications. It can be used for power lines, DC-DC converters, EMI filters, audio frequency filters, and power supply filters. This inductor is also very popular in high current drive and switching applications, such as portable device’s DC-DC converters, USB port, mobile phone, and laptop power supplies etc. Moreover, in the RF circuit designs, the inductor can provide superior shielding from radio frequency interference (RFI).

In terms of the working principle, the IR02ST561J fixed inductor produces a magnetic field when electrical current flows through a conductor, such as a wire or circuit board trace. The magnetic fields stored on the inductor behave according to Lenz’s law which established the relationship between electromagnetic fields and the direction of current flow through a conductor. It is said that the induced electromotive force (EMF) or voltage in the conductor is proportional to the rate of change of the magnetic flux.

To perform their function, all inductors have two basic characteristics that need to be taken into account. Firstly, impedance measures the opposition to an ac current, usually expressed in ohms. Higher current create higher impedance. Secondly, inductance relates to the magnetic flux and is measured in Henrys (H). A larger inductance implies more magnetic flux stored in the inductor.
