DC-DC Converters aim to convert an AC or DC voltage to a different DC voltage. This type of technology is widespread among many applications, and one example is IR1215S.
The IR1215S is a high efficiency, non-isolated DC-DC boost converter, with up to 96% efficiency providing an output voltage 1.2V-15V higher than its input voltage which can range from 2.5V-17V. The IR1215S is specifically designed to directly controller a wide range of high power LED lighting modules, minimising system cost and complexity. An internal synchronous rectifier with output from 0.5A to 15A makes it the ultimate LED driver for driving high currents.
The output voltage of the IR1215S is set by the voltage on the ANG pin. A voltage between 0.1V and 0.9V on the ANG pin sets the output voltage to the default level which is preset in the factory. This voltage can be adjusted either manually or digitally with external components. Apart from the ANG pin, the input voltage also affects the output voltage and this can be adjusted by turning the potentiometers on the device.
The working principle of the IR1215S converter is fairly simple. It consists of two main components: a power switch and a pulse width modulation (PWM) controller. The PWM controller determines the on/off timing of the power switch, which in turn regulates the output voltage. When the input voltage is higher than the output voltage, current flows through the power switch. The amount of current that flows through the power switch is controlled by the PWM controller, which adjusts the power switch on/off timing.
