Introduction

Analysis of IR3220STR application field and working principle is one of the important tasks in PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuits) – Motor Drivers, Controllers. In this paper, we will discuss in depth the IR3220STR application field and its working principle.

Application Field

The IR3220STR is an advanced integrated four-phase brushless DC motor driver. It is an intelligent power IC for controlling four-phase brushless DC motors in automotive, industrial, and consumer applications. Its wide operating voltage range from 4.5V to 40V, makes it suitable for a versatile range of voltage applications. It provides four driver channels including 6A peak current per phase. It also has a built-in pre-driver logic to develop sensory feedback paths to detect back-EMF enabling closed-loop control. The IR3220STR is capable of monitoring temperature and motor stall, providing Dynamic Off-Time Control (DOTC) that ranges from 0.1μs to 0.9μs. The DotC feature helps to reduce the power dissipation, reduce audible noise, and achieve motion control. It also features protections like over-current, phase-short protections, and Over-Temperature Shutdown Protection (OTSD). Automatic brake and reverse actions of the IR3220STR help reduce power dissipation. It can also detect the phase failure of a winding pair, providing a signal for current-limiting protection. Additionally, it strengthens the effective gate drive signal, providing a guaranteed 7V high side gate drive voltage to ensure the safe cut-off of the power switch.

Working Principle

The IR3220STR integrates two-level gate-driving for controlling the four-phase brushless DC motor. Two sets of gate driving signals are generated to reduce the output voltage and current ripple, achieving motor smoothness and vibration suppression. The IR3220STR integrates a charge pump converter, providing 24V power supply for high-side devices. The integrated low-side switches feature a logic-level gate driving. The gate driving of high-side devices is enabled with the integrated gate-driving sources driven by a PWM signal. The integrated logic circuit assures the high side device is switched on only when the proper number of enable signals are received. The integrated short circuit protection algorithm helps protect the motor winding and the IR3220STR devices from current overload. A feedback loop responding to the current sense signal checks for current overload conditions or a stalled motor and enables the protection algorithm. The driver works in parallel with the power switching device and the winding of the motor. Inputs from the logic circuit enable the device to switch on in correct sequence resulting in the correct direction of rotation. The sense signals from the phases provide the information of the back EMF voltage of the phases providing the feedback loop for the control system.

Conclusion

This paper discussed a comprehensive analysis of IR3220STR application field and working principle, which belongs to PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuits) – Motor Drivers, Controllers. The IR3220STR is an advanced integrated four-phase brushless DC motor driver, which provides four driver channels with 6A peak current per phase. It features protections like over-current, phase-short protections and over-temperature shutdown protection (OTSD). The driver integrates two-level gate-driving for controlling the four-phase brushless DC motor. It also integrates a charge pump converter, providing 24V power supply for high-side devices. The feedback loop of the current sense signal helps protect the motor winding and the IR3220STR devices from current overload. These properties make the IR3220STR suitable for a versatile range of voltage applications and better motor control performance.
