ISD4002-150ED, also known as the single-chip voice record/playback device, is an integration of a CODEC, stepped-gain microphone amplifier, a 4-input line amplifier, six electronic volume controls and a speaker amplifier, all offered in a tiny 28-pin DIP package. Due to its exceptional features and specs, the ISD4002-150ED is often employed in numerous voice interface applications such as voice playback machines or device control, voice recording systems and speech recognition.

The device utilizes Dynamic Compression, to ensure flawless operation even if extreme sound field compression occurs. This feature will automatically adjust the compression while running those applications where the sound pressure level may change suddenly due to abrupt dynamic changes in the input signal.

The ISD4002-150ED features CMOS technology, 10-bit and 8-level operations, each with independent and programmable 8-level digital gain controls. These devices support up to 10-bit D/A converters, thereby allowing users to choose from 16 different pre-programmed digital gain settings. In addition, the device provides a 0 to -7 dB “step” attenuator for four-level audio output levels and a 4-post gain control for setting the differential gain for four input lines. The device also implements a master volume control feature which allows users to easily adjust the overall loudness of the audio output signal.

The working principle of the device is based on two basic principles: analogue to digital conversion (ADC) and digital to analogue conversion (DAC). The ADC is used to convert an analogue signal into a digital signal. The DAC is used to convert a digital signal into an analogue signal. The signal is then sent through a multi-level filter and gain control circuit, where it is amplified, then encoded, and finally stored in a memory buffer. When the user wants to replay the audio, the signal is retrieved from the memory buffer and converted back into analogue form by the DAC.
