Working Principle
ISL12029IB27Z Real-time clock module integrates a crystal oscillator and battery-backed static RAM to keep track of time in real-time and accurate manner. It works based upon a 32.768kHz frequency quartz crystal oscillator to provide accurate time keeping and seconds count, calibrated up to plus/minus 2ppm. The surface mount package is ideal for industrial applications and keeps the time even if power is removed. The 32KHz crystal oscillator provides a 32768Hz frequency input to an internal frequency divider, providing a 1Hz clock signal. This 1Hz clock pulse is then provided to an internal counter which counts to 60, after which an overflows to the alarm register and then restarts the counting cycle.
In addition, the module has an ON/OFF Time Register (OTR), which provides an independent input, and it can hold up to two 32-bit ON/OFF parameters. This register provides multiple ON/OFF intervals which triggers the hardware logic internally to take appropriate action, such as turning on or off certain device or supplying certain power. END OF ON/OFF is a bit that is set when the device is activated. This bit can be used to generate interrupt by programming the interrupt control register to generate an external interrupt.
ISL12029IB27Z also provides an alarm interrupt output to an interrupt pin when the alarm time is matches the current time. This module can be used to synchronize a system or to initiate a process at a specified time. The alarm interrupt output can be used to reset a microcontroller in case communication interface with MCU is too slow. The module can be programmed with a serial interface to set the time, date and alarm, as well as other control parameters.
