The ISL29038IROZ-EVALZ Evaluation Board is designed to support sensing applications that use the ISL29038 Light-to-Digital I2C Interface and High-Accuracy Digital Ambient Light Sensor. The onboard IC, ISL29038, is a low-power 16-bit high-accuracy ambient light digital sensor that can detect light from 0.01 lux up, which is orders of magnitude lower than a typical photodiode. The device measures and computes the intensity of ambient light as 16-bit digital words, and these values can then be transmitted and interfaced to over an I2C/SMBus communication interface.
An Evaluation Board is used for testing, integration, and performance tuning before designing the sensing portion of any application. The ISL29038IROZ-EVALZ Evaluation Board is one form of such evaluation board and has all the components ready and placed on-board for testing and tuning of the sensing application.
The design of the evaluation board is based on the Intersil\'s ISL29038 light-to-digital I2C interface and high-accuracy digital ambient light sensor IC. With the ISL29038, the evaluation board can tell the state and intensity of ambient light in three different operating modes: Interrupt mode, Measurement Mode, and Sleep mode. In order to make fielding or debugging of the IC easy, the board also has a dedicated debug header.
An Evaluation Board is used to evaluate the application-specific design before it is released to the market. This evaluation board is no different and is also used to evaluate the performance of the ISL29038 light-to-digital I2C interface and high-accuracy digital ambient light sensor IC. The main use of this IC in the IOT device is to monitor the intensity of ambient light.
The ISL29038 operates as an I2C slave device. It uses a two-wire serial interface so that it can communicate with the host microcontroller. The IC includes two 16-bit registers -- the Integrate-mode Register and the Interrupt-mode Register. The Integrate-mode Register is used to measure the low-level light intensity while the Interrupt-Mode Register is used for detection of mid-level light intensities. The IC also supports three different operating modes: Interrupt, Measurement and Sleep mode.
In interrupt mode, the IC starts measuring ambient light and generates an interrupt signal if the light intensity is lower than the programmed intensity level. Upon generation of the interrupt, the external logic device will be signaled and the light level can be read from the integrator register. This is most suitable for applications where the ambient light is not constant and sudden changes in the ambient light needs to be tracked.
In measurement mode, the IC measures the ambient light level at specific intervals. The integrator register is read regularly and the result is stored for further analysis. This mode is best suited for applications where symmetric ambient light has to be measured regularly.
In sleep mode, the IC goes to a lower power mode. All of the built in functions such as the analog-to-digital converters, bandgap and oscillators are disabled in this mode. This mode is used when the sensing application requires only minimal power consumption.
Due to its high-accuracy and low-power characteristics, the ISL29038 can be used in a wide variety of applications such as portable electronics, consumer electronics, lighting and automation, industrial automation and medical devices. The Evaluation Board provides a quick and cost-effective way for users to integrate this sensor into their applications. With its built in features such as: switch-selectable measurement modes, programmable direct-and-indirect light intensity measurement, integrated voltage measurement that can be used to measure battery voltage and an swappable mounting socket, the ISL29038 Evaluation Board is a versatile tool for the development of sensing applications.
