The ISL32740EVAL1Z board, manufactured by Intersil, is designed for the specific purpose of developing and demonstrating the capabilities of its ISL32740 optical encoder interface. The board offers the user the capability to program the encoder parameters and outputs via a convenient Intel/Microprocessor interface. In doing so, the user is able to evaluate the encoder\'s performance and features with much more finesse and accuracy than with any stand-alone device.
The ISL32740EVAL1Z board is designed mostly for industrial applications, primarily for robots, computer numerical controls, as well as positioning control and tracking systems. Generally, it is used for measuring positional angle, speed and direction of rotation. It interfaces with a microcontroller similar to the Arduino, MC68HC908, and many more through a serial I2C Bus to read the rotor angle and speed output from the ISL32740 encoder.
The ISL32740EVAL1Z board is easy to utilize, as it works on the principle of two pairs of Hall sensors, a fixed Hall array, and a rotating magnetized disk. This magnetized disk is connected to the rotational shaft which enables the measurement of the rotational angle as the rotation is varied.
The Hall array, which includes three Hall sensors connected together in a triangular formation, creates a constant magnetic field. As the magnetized disk in the rotational system begins to rotate, it affects the magnetic field which is detected by the two sensors of the Hall array. The two pairs of Hall sensors sense the magnetic flux changes in the rotational system initiated by the rotation of the magnetized disk. The Hall array transmits these changes to the ISL32740 encoder and the changes are converted into incremental positions, angles and speed. This signal is transmitted to the integrated CPU, MC68HC908 platform, where the data can be analyzed and evaluated.
The ISL32740EVAL1Z includes a comprehensive graphical user interface (GUI) to aid in the integration and application of the ISL32740encoder with a microcontroller unit. The GUI is designed with easy and self-explanatory visuals that illustrate the interactive tools and operating conditions on the ISL32740EVAL1Z board.
The GUI includes detailed instructions and design examples for the user to establish an I2C communication between the ISL32740 encoder and a host controller.The ISL32740EVAL1Z also includes a comprehensive library of software written specifically for the ISL32740 encoder which can be downloaded through the GUI. Finally, the GUI includes step-by-step instructions for integrating, testing, and programming the ISL32740 encoder with a microcontroller.
