ISL6520IR is a single 3A/dual 1.5A/step-down/step-up/buck-boost synchronous switching regulator controller. It integrates a high accuracy, adjustable output voltage on- chip voltage references and enhances features, such as active compensation, low dropout operation, and wide output voltage range. ISL6520IR provides an excellent performance in both high-side and low-side N-Channel MOSFET control and synchronization. In addition, ISL6520IR has adjustable frequency with programmable soft-start and OVP, making it ideal for a wide range of voltage conversion applications.

Working Principle

The ISL6520IR is a synchronous step-down switching regulator controller with two phase p-channel/n-channel MOSFETs control. It includes on-chip voltage reference, current sense amplifier, oscillator, temperature monitor, soft-start circuit and other components. The step-down operation is achieved by powering up the low-side MOSFET at the proper duty cycle through the current sense circuit. The output voltage is regulated by monitoring the voltage on the upper sense resistor, which in turn controls the low-side duty cycle. A standard PWM voltage mode control architecture is employed to generate the duty cycle. The fixed frequency oscillator is used to set the frequency of the output voltage ripple. Output current control is realized by the current sense circuit and the over-current protection feature monitors the current sense voltage at a predetermined level.

ISL6520IR also provides a programmable soft-start and over-voltage protection circuit. The soft-start circuit is used to reduce the inrush current when the converter is powered up. The over-voltage protection circuit is used to protect the conversion output from excessive voltage levels.
