ISL6527AIR Application Field and Working Principle

The ISL6527AIR is a highly efficient digital PWM controller with integrated mid-voltage MOSFET that utilizes peak current mode control. This digitally enhanced control technique allows for fast transient response, excellent high-line regulation, seamless transition between light load stages, and minimized EMI. The digital control allows software communicate with the IC through a serial Interface (SMBus or PMBus).The features of the ISL6527AIR include an over current comparator that limits inductor current to the set level, allowing the IC to predict current step size, providing fast current loop response. Additionally, a programmable DC/DC power ration utilizing pulse skipper modulations, support for D-CAP3, and OTP features for storing the system configuration.

Application Field

The ISL6527AIR PWM controller from Intersil provides a complete mid-range voltage PWM controller solution, as well as integrated mid-voltage MOSFET, suitable for DC/DC, VRAM, and Digital Point of Load applications. It works with a wide range of input voltages, from 2.5V to 28V, and offers output voltages up to 20V, in either single or Dual (1.5 μF) outputs. It has a maximum output current of 9A, and can be configured to generate up to 4A continuous output current, while still providing excellent line/load regulation and fast transient response.

Working Principle

The ISL6527AIR is based on the peak current mode control, which enables fast transient response. The input source provides pulses to drive the high-side and low-side MOSFETs, which will either allow or block current flow to the inductor, thus regulating the output voltage. To ensure a consistent output voltage, the duty cycle and frequency of the input signal has to be adjusted. This duty cycle/frequency is determined according to the PWM signal\'s signal, which can be controlled by the user. To obtain a low ripple output, the signal should be set to a high frequency. The signal can be adjusted to the user requirements based on this peak current mode control principle.
