The ISL6745A-EVAL3Z is an evaluation board for a high efficiency, low quiescent current and low-cost synchronous boost DC/DC converter. The product is ideal for driving high power LEDs with up to 2.5A continuous current. The board features a wide input voltage range of 2.7V to 16V and delivers a programmable output current (up to 2.5A) over an adjustable output voltage range of 3V to 11V.

The ISL6745A-EVAL3Z is designed to evaluate the performance of Texas Instruments’ ISL6745A low-cost Power Supply solution. This solution uses an innovative A/D converter to control a high-frequency voltage-fed PWM-driven step-up converter that includes all the necessary power conversion components, and an LED driver output stage. The board includes an on-board GPIO controlled step-up controller and an integrated high-performance analog controller that allows simple wiring and a low-cost solution to drive LEDs.

The working principle for the ISL6745A-EVAL3Z is simple and straightforward. The on-board GPIO controller receives the digital PWM signal from the controlling host. This signal is then used to generate a low-power variable duty cycle signal to control the step-up switched-mode converter. The step-up converter transfers the energy from the voltage source to the output stage, which switches on the LEDs. The on-board microcontroller monitors and adjusts the output current through use of a Programmable Resistor (PR) to regulate the LED current.

The output current is set with Programmable Resistor (PR) through reads the data from built-in PR register and adjusts the output current accordingly. This will ensure a consistent output current and improve the reliability of the system. The designer can also program the PR setting to optimise the output current over temperature, time and other external factors.

In addition to the PR register, the ISL6745A-EVAL3Z also has a Digital Temperature Sensor (DTS) for improved system performance. The DTS can monitor and adjust the PR setting as necessary to ensure stable and consistent output current. This will reduce component and system costs by eliminating the need for costly temperature compensation circuitry.
