IntroductionThe ISL6845IU is a high integration DC/DC controller for Variable Voltage Rail technology. It integrates a synchronous buck controller for AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.) Voltage Regulators and a dual phase asynchronous buck controller for wider voltage range. This integrated device is ideal for Intel C-States and AMD\'s Cool’n’Quiet technology that characterize the markets’ green requirements.Application FieldThe ISL6845IU is ideal for use in AMD and Intel based system boards. It is designed to control the power delivery of various components, such as CPU and memory, in order to maximize the green requirements, such as system-level thermal management, and optimize power efficiency.The ISL6845IU is an ideal device for Intel C-states, providing two voltage domains to maintain compatibility with AMD and Intel based boards. It can also provide ACPI support, allowing the host BIOS to adjust the voltage rails in the system. In addition, the device features a CLKOUT pin with built-in divider to provide adapted clock signals out from the device.The ISL6845IU appears to be best suited for high-current power supplies for server and desktop applications. These applications will require a DC/DC converter that can support multiple voltage levels and the ISL6845IU can provide such robust power management capabilities.Working PrincipleThe primary way the ISL6845IU works is by a switching mode power supply (SMPS). This device allows the user to adjust the main output voltage according to specific requirements. It features two independent synchronous buck outputs and one dual-phase asynchronous buck output.The buck controller works in two distinct stages. In the first stage, a buck controller operates in constant on-time or constant frequency. This is ideal for fast transient response, low noise, and wide range of switching frequency. In the second stage, the dual-phase asynchronous buck controller eliminates the output voltage ripple during low line, low load conditions. This buck controller operates in voltage mode control, providing low noise and good transient response.The ISL6845IU can also incorporate a number of support functions such as a watchdog timer, voltage sequencing, and over/under voltage protection.
