The ISL8225MEVAL3Z evaluation board is one of the most popular evaluation boards for DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) SMPSs. This evaluation board system offers an efficient means of evaluating and testing the performance of a DC/DC or AC/DC power converter.

The ISL8225MEVAL3Z includes three parts. This includes the application board, the ISL8225M controller board, and a PMBus programming board. The application board provides the user with the schematic, layout, and components necessary to create and test their own isolated DC/DC or AC/DC power converter. The ISL8225M controller board provides control and monitoring of the application board and converter using commands via the PMBus. Finally, the PMBus programming board allows for programming of the IC registers on the controller board through a dedicated GUI for visual tuning and control of the system.

The application board includes an isolated power stage comprising of 2x ISL8225M gate drivers, 2x IRF740S MOSFETS, 3x OPT101 photodiodes, two 3A DC/DC Converters, two 500mA DC/DC Converters, a ferrite inductor, and passive components. This power stage is designed to efficiently convert a wide input range of 9V to 17V to a desired output voltage in either a buck, boost, buck-boost, or flyback topology.

The ISL8225M controller board includes a 16-bit RISC microprocessor, 4x digital I/O ports, 2x analog I/O ports, and an isolated SPI/PMBus interface for communication and control of the system. The main features of the controller board are the auto-start and -stop (with delay time adjustable) functions, auto-compensation and auto-optimization of control parameters, feedback voltage monitoring, and overcurrent / over voltage protection.

The PMBus programming board allows users to adjust the registers in the controller board. This is done using a dedicated GUI (Graphical User Interface) which is specifically designed for this application board. The GUI provides various controls to tune the values in the registers for optimal operation. This includes tuning the input and output voltage, control parameters, monitoring parameters, overvoltage and overcurrent protection settings, etc.

The ISL8225MEVAL3Z is a versatile evaluation board system for testing DC/DC and AC/DC applications. It provides an effective means of evaluating and optimizing the performance of a DC/DC or AC/DC power converter. Through its three components, the user can easily create a working prototype which is then tuned and inspected through the use of the PMBus programming board.
