ISL83385EIAZ-T

ISL83385EIAZ-T is a digital isolator with one side powered transciever, integrated with a 4.3uH common-mode choke, from the High-Speed, Tiny-Footprint Digital Isolators product family of Intersil Corporation. It is an isolated, one-lane Bi-directional USB 2.0 compatible device. It has an integrated isolated 4.3uH common-mode choke and supports data rates up to 12Mbps. The device offers 3kV Optical-Isolation to protect systems from effect of noise. ISL83385EIAZ-T is available in a small 24 pin TSSOP with an exposed thermal pad for increased heat dissipation.

Application Fields

ISL83385EIAZ-T can be used in various applications including industrial automation, medical, conveyor monitoring and other system components; DC motor control; communications (telecom, remote LAN); consumer electronics, power and energy monitoring; uninterruptible power supply; military and aerospace; and any other application requiring a connection between an isolated and non-isolated system.

The device can also be applied in printer interface, high-speed protocols, disk drive controller, high-speed USB isolator and control networks, Ethernet, Firewire, PC isolation, voice-over-IP and data applications. Furthermore, the device meets the electrical requirements for design of Type B USB interfaces for USB 2.0.

Working Principle

The ISL83385EIAZ-T converts electrical signals between electrically isolated logic levels on the two sides with the help of basic principles of capacitive, galvanic and radio-frequency (RF) coupling. On-board magnetics provide performance improvement.

The device operates with two ports such as the public (non-isolated) port and isolated port. It has one isolated (master) port (ISO) and one public (slave) port (PUB). The logical side of the port can be low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS), the ports transmits and receives depending on the direction of the signal.

The function of the device is based on dc pulse-generation within the chip converts the logic levels of the isolated port and compares it with the logic level of the public port and hence make the signal pass through the optical-channel, interfacing the two ports.

The integrated Opto-isolator of ISL83385EIAZ-T provides electrical-isolation barrier consisting of a board (single-channel) LED driven by a single MOSFET switch. The LED accompanies with a photodetector containing a photodiode and a transimpedance amplifier, thus it forms a complete circuit. When light intensity received in the photodiode is above the set voltage limit a logic “1” is issued while the reverse sets it to “0”.

The galvanic isolation component incorporated in the device provides a two-way high-speed isolation of signals up to 3kV between the two ports. A 4.3uH common-mode choke on the isolated side of the device suppresses common-mode noise signals.
