The ISL9021AIIFZ-T is a Geared Voltage Regulator (GVR) in the Linear PMIC family that provides true ±10V operation over temperatures, enabling end products to offer the quickest transient response in the industry, maximum efficiency with fast load transients, and excellent line and load regulation. This GVR makes a better alternative for negative supply designs as compared to commonly used discrete negative regulators that are typically inefficient and slow to respond. As a result, increased system performance and reliability are seen due to the GVR\'s reduced hot spot and electric noise.
The ISL9021AIIFZ-T has a wide input operating range of 6V up to 35V, making it suitable to provide a +10V output over the entire automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C). Moreover, it is capable of several loads: up to 70mA at +10V and up to 40mA for the -10V output, making it useful for precision monitoring of ±5V and ±10V, current sense amplifier, analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and digital-to-analog converter (DAC) reference voltage, current loop control and multiple other precision applications, especially those in which a very fast transient response is required.
The ISL9021AIIFZ-T\'s working principle is based on the GVR technology—an architecture that combines a pair of power switches in a single IC. The power switches are completely independent of each other, allowing the current to flow through needed direction only and be limited to the maximum load (above 70mA for +10V and 40mA for -10V)—eliminating the need of external components (i.e., current limiting resistor) needed with other regulators to avoid excessive current. This GVR is also designed with an internal charge-pump circuit to maintain the proper voltage gap between the power switches.
The product features also include internal resonant circuitry that helps to reduce the minimum on-time of the power switches, eliminating the need of bulky external inductors. It also has an advanced foldback current limiting technology to maintain the corresponding output voltage during overload conditions. In addition, the power switches can handle up to 60V, which can be beneficial for high voltage applications such as distributed power systems, LED lighting and telecom regulated power supplies.
