1. Describe
The ISO7240MDW, ISO7241x, and ISO7242x devices are quad-channel digital isolators with multi-channel configuration and output enable. These devices feature logic input and logic output buffers separated by silicon dioxide (SiO2) isolation barriers from Texas Instruments. Used in conjunction with isolated power supplies, these devices help block high voltages, isolate grounds, and prevent noise currents from entering the local ground and interfering with or damaging sensitive circuits. All four channels of the ISO7240MDW family of devices are in the same orientation. The ISO7241x family of devices have three non-inverting channels and one reverse channel. The ISO7242x family of devices has two channels in each direction. Devices with a C suffix (C option) have TTL input thresholds and noise filters at the inputs to prevent transient pulses from passing to the output of the device. Devices with an M suffix (M option) have CMOS VCC/2 input thresholds and no input noise filter or additional propagation delay. The ISO7240CF device has an input disable function on pin 7 and a selectable high or low fail safe output function through the CTRL pin (pin 10). The failsafe output is logic high when a logic high is placed on the CTRL pin or not connected. If a logic low signal is applied to the CTRL pin, the failsafe output will change to a logic low output state. The input disable feature of the ISO7240CF device prevents data from passing through the isolation barrier to the output. The output is set by the CTRL pin when the input is disabled or VCC1 is powered down. These devices can be powered from any combination of 3.3V or 5V supplies. The signal input pins are 5V tolerant regardless of the voltage supply level used. These devices are characterized for operation over an ambient temperature range of –40°C to +125°C.

ISO7240MDW series devices use single-ended TTL or CMOS logic switching technology. The supply voltage range for VCC1 and VCC2 is 3.15 V to 5.5 V. When designing with digital isolators, keep in mind that due to the single-ended design construction, digital isolators do not conform to any specific interface standard and are only used to isolate single-ended CMOS or TTL digital signal lines. Isolators are typically placed between the data controller (i.e., μC or UART) and the data converter or line transceiver, regardless of interface type or standard.
