Digital Isolators are devices used to electrically isolate two circuits, often needing to be of differing potential. These isolators must still allow signals to penetrate the insulation barrier, often in the form of digital signals. The LED and photodiode are positioned in such a way that specific light signals emitted by the LED pass through the isolation barrier of the optocoupler and activate the photodiode. Once the light signal has been relayed, it is rectified by the diode bridge and then amplified by the two driver circuits. The input signal is also filtered by the optocoupler to reduce noise and eliminate unwanted circuit switching. The output from the two driver circuits then goes to the power ICs of the system, driving the load. The ISO7420FED can be configured to provide isolation of up to 6kV.

One example application of the ISO7420FED is communication interfaces. It is useful for isolating different lines in a network, such as RS-232, EIA-485, as well as Ethernet. Using the ISO7420FED eliminates noise from the data transmissions and prevents cross-talk between lines as the signals pass through the optocoupler.

Another application for the ISO7420FED is motion control systems. It isolates the control circuits from the motors connected to them so that both can be operated at different voltage levels. Isolation of the two systems also prevents feedback of electrical noise from the motors into the control circuits. The ISO7420FED also helps to reduce power consumption by providing voltage-level shifting for motor control in energy-sensitive applications.
